Our People

It is an age old maxim that, in life, it’s ‘not what you do but the way that you do it’; and that could not be truer than in the giving of financial planning advice. All clients, whether they are individuals or large companies, require a bespoke service. One that is tailored to their needs, empathetic to their requirements and delivered in a manner that is enjoyed, valued and appreciated. Clients, irrespective of how much money they have to invest or what they do for a living, want a service that makes them feel special.

At English Mutual however, we believe that, just as important as ‘how you do it’ is ‘who you do it with.'

The ability to provide a ‘special’ kind of service requires people who have the vital skills, attitudes and ethics to deliver it. And that doesn’t just apply to our Financial Planners. It is of paramount importance that our Directors, managers and all of our administrative staff all share the same core values and commitment to excellence. All of the English Mutual members are key to the success of our business and the achievement of all that it stands for.

Therefore, we pick our team members very carefully. Historically we have not advertised for new people. The English Mutual Group has grown organically over the last 14 years into a company with a ‘family culture’ of which we are very proud. The vast majority of those working within the organisation came to work here because they knew someone within the company and had friends here, were known to the Directors, or had heard about the way we do business and the way that we treat people, both internally and externally. They wanted to become part of our story. To find a decent, transparent, motivating and appreciative place to work and to find a safe, value driven home for their clients.

To join they had to have the right levels of experience and the absolute ability to do the job for which they were recruited. A proven track record of high achievement. An understanding of good customer service. An excellent work ethic. Empathy. Decency. A great sense of humour.

In an industry that has so often and, to its detriment, been obsessed with size and huge Planner numbers, The English Mutual Group is special. We do not believe necessarily that big is beautiful. We believe that only ‘beautiful is beautiful.’

Our members have been hand picked, each of them recruited steadily and surely by the Directors. Each recruited under the same set of values.

As a result, English Mutual’s Directors, Financial Planners and back-office staff come from all corners of the country; they have a variety of backgrounds and an even wider range of interests. Each is a different person, with each individual bringing something new, something interesting and something positive to the group.
